Ahmed Kathrada whose birth name is Ahmed Mohamed Kathrada was a South African politician, former political prisoner and anti-apartheid activist. He was born on 21 August 1929 in Schweizer-Reneke, Transvaal Province, Union of South Africa. Ahmed Mohamed Kathrada died on 28 March 2018 from complications of a cerebral embolism. Ahmed Kathrada Childhood
Ahmed Mohamed Kathrada was born on 21 August 1929. He was born in Schweizer-Reneke in the Western Transvaal. Ahmed had six siblings and was the fourth among them. He belonged to the Gujarati Bohra family of South African Indian immigrant parents from Surat, Gujarat. At a young age, Kathrada’s education was not very comforting. He could not attend European or African schools because of his Indian origin. Ahmed Kathrada had to move to Johannesburg for his education.

At a tender age, 12, he became an active political activist after he joined the Young Communist League of South Africa. Many leaders of the Transvaal Indian Congress influenced his engagement with the League. Among these leaders include Dr. Yusuf Dadoo, IC Meer, Moulvi and Yusuf Cachalia, and JN Singh.
