Pravin Gordhan Biography
Pravin Gordhan whose birth name is Pravin Jamnadas Gordhan is a well known South African politician. He was also the former Minister of Finance. He has been Minister of Finance two times. First term was from 2009-2014. He was born on 12 April 1949 in Durban and is currently 68 years old. Aside being Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan has also held other ministerial positions.
He was the former Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs from 2014–2015. Pravin Jamnadas Gordhan lost his position as Minster of Finance on 31 March 2017. Pravin Gordhan Early years
Pravin Gordhan was born and raised in Durban. He is the son of Jamnadasbhai Gordhan. He attended the Sastri College in 1967. Pravin Jamnadas Gordhan enrolled into the University for Durban-Westvillein 1973. Upon completion, he was awarded a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. He also attended the University of Cape Town and University of South Africa in 2007, He got himself actively involved with members of the Natal Indian Congress (NIC) in 1971. Three years later, he was elected to its executive council.
Gordhan’s political run begun in the early 1970. He helped establish grassroots organisations which undertook underground activities. While in politics, Gordhan Pravin was also doing his pharmacy internship at King Edward VIII Hospital. He completed his internship in 1974. Gordhan continued to intern there until 1981 when the Natal Provincial Administration dismissed him for his political activities while he was in detention. Pravin Jamnadas Gordhan was released from jail in 1982. He also received a banning orders that was active until June 1983. Gordhan attended the launch of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Cape Town 1983 where the also NIC became an affiliated organisation.

Gordhan was a member of parliament from 1994 to 1998. With his political influence, he lead the parliamentary committee that focused on the implementation of the new Constitution and the transformation of local government in the post-apartheid.
From 1991 and 1994, Pravin Gordhan chaired the Convention for a Democratic South Africa from 1991 to 1994. He also served as the Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service from 1999 to 2009.
Gordhan was chairman of the World Customs Organization in from 2000 to 2006.
He succeeded Trevor Manuel as Minister of Finance on 10 May 2009. Under President Jacob Zuma adminstration. Nhlanhla Nene replaced Pravin Gordhan as Minister of Finance on 25 May 2014.
That same year, Gordhan was appointed as the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. He succeeded Lechesa Tsenoli. Lechesa became Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa.
On 14 December 2015, Gordhan was re-appointed as Minister of Finance. He replaced David van Rooyen who took office for only 4 days.
Unfortunately for Pravin Jamnadas Gordhan, he was replaced by President Jacob Zuma. He lost his ministerial position to Malusi Gigaba on 31 March 2017 during the cabinet reshuffle in 2017.
